It seems that Seven’s star quality has taken a life of its own.  He’s like a reality star that really isn’t famous for anything other than being famous… Those of you that have followed me on Twitter and/or FaceBook may remember that I adopted him as a gift for Chris. He’s been a part of our studio for over a year now.  In the beginning he would try to crash the photo shoots and get into the shot. Locking him into the bathroom didn’t work since he would start crying so loud it would distract the models and makeup artists.  In the past few months he’s matured a bit and has learned to tell difference between work time and play time but hes still  puts on the charm any time a pretty model comes into the studio.

Took this pic of Chris and Seven earlier today.

Children are just little people without adult hangups. When I photograph them instead of over directing I prefer to just let them be themselves and let the portrait happen naturally.  I think sometimes people forget children have stories to tell.  You don’t have to pose them in weird expressive ways.. they have their own expression and their own stories to tell…naturally.

We worry about what a child will become tomorrow, yet we forget that he is someone today.  ~Stacia Tauscher

I’ve been feeling very introspective the past few weeks. Contemplating my life and defining areas I need to develop and work on.  I think its good to step back sometimes and look at where you’ve been, where you’re at and where you’re headed.  I’d be lying if I told you that I have it completely figured out but I don’t think anyone really does.  That’s what makes life interesting.

Took this pic of myself earlier today. Sort of summarizes how I feel right now.

I’m a lil obsessed with makeup.. I admit it. I’m a die hard MAC cosmetics girl but you’ll never see me walk away from a great deal on a drug store brand. Although my cosmetic case looks like a mini Sephora, my love of Make Up Artists has nothing to do with my obsession with Make Up.  I love Make Up Artists because they are skilled at making the women I photograph look fabulous.  When I photograph a woman, I want to display her beauty at its highest level. Whether her style is classic, trendy or in between I want her to look her very best. Whether my client prefers the “natural look”, which we all know really isn’t natural or a more “glam look”, a  professional make up artist knows how to use shading and contouring to enhance her features as well as cover up imperfections (you know we all have them!).   Any time I’m having my own pictures done, I always hire a pro.. I’m not ashamed to admit it! lol.  It feels so nice to sit back in a chair and have someone work their magic.  I’m not flawless but I know that with the help of an MUA I can turn it up a notch.  So anytime a girl asks me if she really should hire a pro to do her make up for a photo session, I say hell yes! But  I do understand that hiring a pro is not an option for ladies on a serious budget (hard times!).  If hiring one is not economically feasible a good alternative is to stop by Sephoras or a MAC cosmetics counter and try to get them to do a quick make over before heading to over to my studio for your shoot.  You’ll feel good, you’ll look good and we’ll get amazing photos!

From the beginning  Xavier and Janet knew they wanted a very private wedding ceremony with only very close family members followed by an intimate dinner with the family.  Although the entire day would be informal, Janet knew she wanted to have beautiful photos that she could look back on.  There is something very special about working with a bride on her wedding day.. whether its an informal family gathering or an elegant formal affair.  The bride is trusting me the photographer to capture one of the most meaningful moments of her life. As a woman and former bride myself I could relate to her anxiety, fears and happiness that day. I’m glad I was able to be a part of it.

This is Nia a good friend and creative collegue.  Shooting her was a wonderful experience.  Nia is a fine artist based in NYC. Don’t let her great fashion sense fool you! Her style does not fall into the starving artist stereo type but she is an amazing fine artist.  You can check out her creative work out on her website www.andinostyles.com

I’m still fascinated by the details I can see through my camera lens.  Details that sort of go unnoticed in the real world. With my lens I can notice something as delicate as a quiver of a lip.  Photography is so personal to me because I feel that I’m as close as anyone could ever get to my subject without actually making physical contact.  The girl in this photo was around 12 feet away from me or more.  There was something about her that I can’t quite explain that I wanted to capture in the photo. I picked up my camera and zoomed in to wait for my shot…somehow she felt my presence across the room, looked in my direction and for a quick moment in time we connected through the lens.  I clicked the shutter at that very moment.  I love this photo.  My only regret is not taking a few steps back to get a better composition but its still one my favorite connections.

We took this shot on my roof.  The light was so intense but I knew I had to make it work. We knew we wanted  fashion forward type of shot so I decided to use the intense light to my favor Katina Flemming a great stylist I’ve worked with a lot this year was on hand to do the styling from head to toe.

This is a shot from another session with Dari. While shooting her we decided to try to use the fence as a backdrop.  Since the background was  bit intense I shot it in a way as to soften the background so that its still gritty but slightly softer. Aren’t her accessories fab? She was styled for this shoot by fashion stylist Katina Flemming.

So this is Chris… my hubby and creative partner in crime.  Of all the images I’ve shot of Chris and I’m pretty sure I’ve shot 1,000′s of him (no exaggeration) this is my favorite.  Although its not technically a perfect photo it has a lot of sentimental value to me.   I shot it quite some time ago (he doesn’t have a mohawk anymore). At the time I shot it I was practicing a new light set up and he sat patiently enduring the hot light for quite some time.  I remember shooting it and seeing him break out in a sweat from the light but he didn’t complain.  He believed in my ability and in my potential and wanted to show his support.  I look at this pic and it reminds me where I was, where I am and where I’m heading. Maybe thats TMI for you guys but I really want to share more than my photos in this blog, I want to share a bit about the girl behind the lens… time for me to get back to work. Thanks for following. ~ Chango Bi
